Americana Barcelona Presents: Charlie Sexton + Calder Allen

Jamboree, Barcelona

Charlie Sexton, raised in Austin, Texas, made his debut with Pictures For Pleasure in 1985 at age 16. He followed that up with a self-titled second album when he was 20. Because word of his reputation as a prodigy guitar player spread far and wide, he found himself an in-demand session player while still in his late teens, and he had the opportunity to record with Ron Wood, Keith Richards and Bob Dylan.

Born to a mother who was just 16 when she gave birth to Charlie, he and his mother moved to Austin when he was just four. His mother would get him out to clubs like the Armadillo World Headquarters and the Soap Creek Saloon. Places like the Split Rail and Antone's blues club became his classrooms. After living outside of Austin for a while with his mother, he moved back to Austin when he was 12, and the musicians around Austin, his heroes, people like Jimmie Vaughan and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Ely and others, took him in and put him up until he could earn more of a living on his own.

From 1992 to 1994, he was a member of Austin's Arc Angels, along with Doyle Bramhall II, Tommy Shannon and Chris "Whipper'' Layton. That group recorded one self-titled album, released in 1992 on Geffen Records. By the time the Arc Angels decided to disband, Sexton was 24 years old and already pegged as a blues musician. But in fact, Sexton plays gutsy, fluid blues guitar, but also spirited rock 'n' roll guitar.

In 1994 and 1995, he formed and recorded with his new group, the Charlie Sexton Sextet, and his debut for MCA Records, Under The Wishing Tree, was released in 1995. Sexton's album was well-received by the critics. Under The Wishing Tree presents Sexton in an array of musical genres, touching on Celtic flavored rock, folk-rock and blues. There is a lot of interplay between guitars, violins, cellos, Dobros and mandolins on the recording, and Sexton's vocals ride high on top of the melodies. On his 1995 tour to support the album, he was accompanied by Susan Boelz, violin, Michael Ramos, organ, and George Reiff, bass and Rafael Gayol, drums.

As a songwriter, Sexton writes about what he knows, so Texas themes permeate his songs. He considers Bob Dylan his strongest songwriting influence, while he counts Austin legends Jimmie Vaughan and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan among his prime influences for guitar playing. His lyrics mix autobiographical experiences with images that are open to interpretation. More great things are in the offing for this guitarist, singer and songwriter as he recently signed a recording contract with Back Porch Records.

The album Alameda, with strong electro-acoustic hues and special guests from the New York folk community and beyond, reveals Jefferson’s sound and musical world. The more traditional soul of his music emerges prominently in the side project The Murphy Beds, a long-standing folk duo with Eamon O'Leary. Jefferson is currently releasing a series of original songs recorded and mixed in the legendary 68 Jay Street building in Brooklyn, located under the Manhattan Bridge overpass.

REED FOEHL

Born in a small country town in New England and raised in a musical family, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Reed Foehl creates stories of the human condition with touching lyrics and a voice that pushes boundaries and honors tradition. His music, a mix of authentic folk and Americana, surprises with its catchy melodies and references to the masters of American songwriting, from Townes Van Zandt to John Prine, passing through Guy Clark and Todd Snider, with whom he has often shared the stage on tour. His latest and sixth studio album is titled Wild Wild Love and was recorded in Austin Texas with The Band of Heathens. The Boston Globe praised his work, saying, "He sings as if he feels every note, each song tells a story... and he tells it surprisingly well." Foehl received a Grammy nomination for his song Fly, co-written with Brent Cobb and performed by country legend Lee Ann Womack. Now based in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Foehl continues to tour the world and is set to come to Italy for the first time to sing his ballads backed by the guitar and vocal harmonies of his musician friend Jefferson Hamer.

Sarah Lee Guthrie’s lineage is undeniable. But if you close your eyes and forget that her last name is synonymous with the river-legacy of a widening current of Americana folk music, you’d still be drawn to the clarity and soul behind her voice. There is a gentle urgency to her interpretations of the songs she sings and the classic music of her heritage. It flows from the continuity of her family, her vital artistic life today, and the songs that have guided her to where she now stands.

It’s been hinted at since she first stepped on the stages of Wolf Trap and Carnegie Hall as a teenager in 1993 singing Pete Seeger’s “Sailin’ Down My Golden River” for sold-out audiences.Decades down the road, Sarah Lee Guthrie is in full bloom. On 2009’s Go Waggaloo she created a family album of original songs (and a few with Woody’s lyrics) that won a Golden Medallion from The Parents' Choice Foundation. The tour that followed in 2010, The Guthrie Family Rides Again, brought it all together as she found herself surrounded by generations of family and friends all celebrating the music of her family.

Sarah Lee Guthrie now ventures on her own path, the rich culture of her family running through the warmth of her own bloodlines. In early 2023, the singer-songwriter, settled in Austin, TX, went into the studio with a notebook full of brand-new songs and older material she’d been saving for the perfect moment.

Born out of these sessions, debut single “Honey and the Dew” is a charming love story brimming with western swing fiddle and lap steel. “I wrote ‘Honey and the Dew’ probably about 10 years ago and as the world would have it, it took all this time to be in the right hands at the right time and believe me it was worth the wait!” A follow-up single is on the horizon.

In addition to her budding solo career, Guthrie collaborates with her sister Cathy as Guthrie Girls, a 6-piece honky tonk band featuring some of Austin’s finest instrumentalists. In a few short months, local buzz and the strength of their debut EP First Season carried Guthrie Girls to prominent slots at HIPNIC, Kerrville Folk Festival, and Kate Wolf Music Festival, among others. Guthrie also performed solo at last year’s Newport Folk Festival and 30A Songwriters Festival.

Sarah Lee Guthrie has the kind of range that only a precious few career-artists command. Armed only with her voice and a Gibson acoustic, she brings festival crowds to a hush. Under her joyful spell, children audiences squeal with delight—clapping, singing, and learning through song. In the dim sway of the late-night honky tonks, old-guard cowboys and Austin two-steppers old and young stand side by side and dance to the songs of the Guthrie Girls. Pick your moment. This is a rare opportunity to witness the growth of one of America's finest young folk singers.

Julie Arsenault + Bradley Lauretti at the Velvet Room

 —  —

Velvet Room, Carrer de l'Aviació, 5, Barcelona

For years, Julie Arsenault has been Canada's best kept secret. In 2014, the Toronto-based singer- songwriter released The Creature That I Call Myself, an album filled with harrowing tales of loss and heartbreak hidden beneath the catchiest of pop tunes. The record was released only on Bandcamp without any fancy marketing campaigns but soon became a cult hit. Six years later, the Barcelona based label Son Canciones reissued the masterpiece worldwide, adding four powerful songs to the original album. Nothing Sweeter is her second studio album and was recorded in a couple of chilly Canadian winter days. The album is a desperate cry from a place of deep silence, treating topics like depression, social awkwardness and sexism with heart-wrenching rawness and tender honesty. Musically, Julie Arsenault has been compared to Haley Heynderickx and Phoebe Bridgers while she herself admits to being inspired by the nostalgic beats of the '50s and '60s.
